Phenomenology and Conformal Field Theory or Can String Theory Predict the Weak Mixing Angle?*

The ini t ial indicat ions that the theory of superstrings [1] would lead to a un ique and direct predict ion of the low energy particle spectrum have proved to be misleading. It now appears [2] that every two-dimensional q u a n t u m field theory with (0,1) superconformal invariance is a classical vacuum state for the heterotic supers t r ing [3]. The nonper turbat ive physics that would tell us which of these vacua is stable a n d / o r show that superstrings are truly consistent only on a subset of them (de te rmined perhaps by some topological invar iant of the space of all field theories)

It has been recently proposed to embed the standard model in a conformal gauge theory to resolve the hierarchy problem, and to avoid assuming either grand unification or low-energy supersymmetry. By model building based on string-field duality we show how to maintain the successful prediction of an electroweak mixing angle with sinθ ≃ 0.231 in conformal gauge theories with three chiral families.

If the standard model is embedded in a conformal theory, what is the simplest possibility? We analyse all abelian orbifolds for discrete symmetry Zp with p ≤ 7, and find that the simplest such theory is indeed SU(3)7.
